The popular Amazing Urban Race event took place on Wednesday, October 4th – beginning at Shed 1, Queens Wharf and culminating at the Greenman Pub for prize giving.
The event was packed to the brim this year, with 20 teams filling the 20 available entry spots. They were required to complete 52 missions around the CBD area, earning points for each mission successfully submitted.
Some of the most entertaining challenges this year were ‘The Dab’ (a video of the whole team dabbing), ‘WOW’ (teams were required to create World of Wearable Arts-type outfit related to their place of work), ‘The Bear Grylls’ (video of a team member eating something unusual) and the ‘Find the Business Games Sticker’ missions (a small orange sticker was placed in three different locations and teams had to find them using cryptic clues).
The most physically arduous challenge this year was ‘The Lap’, which required one member from each team to run around the footpath on the outside of the Basin Reserve. At 700m in circumference, this was no easy feat and we saw plenty of photos of exhausted team members! The fastest time was posted by a fit, young member of the New World Metro team, who blazed around in 2m04s and also earned his side precious bonus points by beating the organiser’s benchmark time by 4 seconds!
After rifling through hundreds of submissions, oftentimes deducting points for inadequate submissions (thereby receiving plenty of stick from disgruntled teams!) and sometimes adding bonus points for top submissions, organisers had found their final standings. Martin Jenkins, who had three teams entered on the day, did a great job to finish with first place and third place. In second place were Fronde, who also finished second in 2016.
This is always an entertaining event for teams to be apart and everyone had a blast. Congrats to all teams for taking part, thanks for the hilarious submissions, and we hope to see you in 2018 for an even bigger and better Amazing Urban Race!
